WINKEL (NIEUWE NIEDORP) PROTESTANT CHURCHYARD

Small cemetery in the North. Rare in the way that the local monument from 1940 is still here and not replaced by the standard CWGC headstones. The crew of Wellington R9286 of 115 Sqn was buried here with all honours after a night-crash in a field nearby. The engraver of the stone had not enough knowledge of the English language (as most people in those days). He phonetically heard the text and chose in stead of 'Y' the Dutch letter combination i + j in 'MAIJ THEIJ REST IN PEACE' on the stone. It even looks ecclesiastical and more solemn. Below on the stone is engraved: "In grateful memory of the six English airmen that fell in our community for our freedom".
